2 + 4 = 6
We were starting to get a few offers to do gigs which we couldn’t do without other musicians. Also, the demos were getting heavy and we needed more guitars and real drums. Scott’s brother Dean had a band in Bristol called the Naked Eye. They were a rock band but looked alright (hair was a bit too long but that could be trimmed) and they could play. It wasn1t long before the Naked Eye split, dropped a few surplus members and became the new Secret Shine.
The new line up was: Jamie Gingell – vocals, Scott Purnell – guitars, Nick Dyte – drums, Dean Purnell – guitars, Paul Vowles – bass. This line-up recorded the rather odd Unbearable single which came out on A Turntable Friend Records in Germany.
We soon became a six-piece recruiting Dean Tyler ex Beatnik Filmstars (who were themselves ex Groove Farm – a once superb Subway Records band). In hindsight Dean was a huge influence on the band. A one man walking publicity machine who had enormous enthusiasm, passion and personality. His departure some years later is still a sore point.
